TL;DR

Positioning is the answer to why a specific buyer should choose you over every other option, including doing nothing. This worksheet forces that answer into a single clear statement by defining who you serve, the problem you solve, the outcome you create, and what makes your approach different. Vague positioning like I build AI solutions makes you invisible; sharp positioning makes the right buyer feel understood immediately. The worksheet also helps you resist the fear of narrowing, showing why a specific position attracts more and better clients than trying to appeal to everyone.

If a buyer cannot instantly tell that you are for them, you are invisible. Positioning is the deliberate choice of who you are for and why you are the obvious pick. This worksheet turns a fuzzy I build AI things into a sharp statement that makes the right person feel understood in one sentence.

The four inputs

  1. 1Who: the specific person or business you serve, named tightly.
  2. 2Problem: the painful, expensive thing they struggle with.
  3. 3Outcome: the concrete result you create for them.
  4. 4Difference: what makes your approach distinct from the alternatives.

Build the statement

Combine the inputs into one sentence: I help [who] solve [problem] by [what you do] so they can [outcome], and unlike [alternative], I [difference]. Read it aloud. If any part is generic, tighten it.

The narrowing fear

Narrowing feels like losing clients, but it does the opposite. A specific position makes the right buyer choose you instantly and refer you easily. Trying to be for everyone makes you the memorable choice for no one.

Test and refine

  • Read the statement to someone in your target market and watch for recognition.
  • If they say that is exactly my problem, it is working.
  • If they look confused or say sounds like everyone, tighten the who or the difference.
  • Revisit it as you learn the exact words real buyers use.

Sharp positioning is the cheapest marketing there is: it makes the right buyer choose you before you say another word. Frequently asked questions

Will narrowing my positioning cost me clients?

It usually gains you clients. A specific position makes the right buyer feel understood and choose you instantly, while a broad one makes you forgettable. You can always serve adjacent clients later, but you win faster by being the obvious choice for one group first.

How specific should my positioning be?

Specific enough that a member of your target market says that is exactly my problem. If your statement could describe any AI freelancer, it is too broad. Tighten the who and the difference until it clearly points at one kind of buyer.

What if I do not know my positioning yet?

Start from your best or most enjoyable past work and the clients you would want more of, then draft a statement and test it in real conversations. Positioning is refined through buyer feedback, not decided perfectly in isolation.

Can I change my positioning later?

Yes, and you probably will as you learn what resonates. Positioning is a living choice, not a permanent brand. Pick a sharp position now to gain traction, and adjust it as real buyer conversations reveal better language.

How is positioning different from an offer?

Positioning is why you, for whom, and why you are different; the offer is the specific thing you sell and its price. Positioning shapes how the offer lands. Get the positioning sharp first, and the offer becomes far easier to write and sell.
